Affordances of Openness

A great many subsubthemes from this subtheme has traveled into Open Tool Building, so now it contains specific things you can do with models, not necessarily implementations of them.

• Even if there were not to be another new open model, the ones that already exist will be enough for the community to improve on, either through fine-tuning or through tool-building. Perhaps tangential to Openness Pragmatism, as the two main modes of tinkering with a model mentioned here are weights and tools. (enough_for_improvement, 9)
• Open weights allow users to work around the biases they notice in the models by adding their own mix of data for training into the mix. This could be referring either to fine-tuning or training from scratch, but more likely to be the former, thus also tangential to ^weightsmorevaluable6. (open_weight_steerability, 4))

• Having access to a base model is a unique affordance of open weight models, as releases usually include both base and instruction tuned models. (access_to_base, 1)
